May 18, 2011 Storm Update
It has been three weeks since 98 tornados ripped across our beautiful state. Life is still far from being back to normal for many of our churches and members who were affected by the storms. Our operation has been categorized into three phases:
1. RESPONSE
The response to the devastating storms has been incredible! The Church of God family has responded with counseling, clothing, supplies and food to feed thousands across our state. As people find temporary housing, that phases is being scaled down. At this point we have four Emergency Operation / Distribution Centers (EODC):
Tuscaloosa
Site: Northport Church of God
2412 Lurleen Wallace Blvd, Northport, AL 35476
IC : Marc Little 205-826-4130 pastortcog@gmail.com
Phil Campbell
Site: Phil Campbell Church Of God
3174 College Road, Phil Campbell, AL 35581
IC: Chris Burns 256-426-9437
Cullman
Site: Daystar Church
200 Daystar Drive, Cullman, AL 35057
IC: Jerry Lawson 256-736-4620 | baypastor@baycommunity.com
Gardendale
Site: ChristWay Church
961 Mount Olive Road, Gardendale, AL 35071
IC: Tony Stacey 205-873-3065 | email: tstacey1508@gmail.com
At this point, these centers do not need any more clothing or food. The current needs are cleaning supplies, personal hygiene items and plastic storage containers.
2. RECOVERY
We are transitioning into the Recovery phase of the operation. We are helping our churches by assisting them in finding places to worship, debris removal on their property and finding temporary housing for our pastors that lost their parsonage.
In this phase, we need heavy equipment such as bulldozers, loaders and dump trucks. Administrative Bishop John D. Childers, the Crisis Management Team and the affected pastors are negotiating with insurance companies in this phase and the next phase of rebuilding.
3. REBUILDING
We are still a few weeks away from implementing this phase due to insurance settlements, new building codes and obtaining permits.
If you have a team of skilled workers who wish to volunteer, please contact Jerry Taylor, Crisis Management Coordinator at 251-895-5788 or Clint Johnson, Incident Coordinator at 205-394-0738. They will coordinate the teams for the rebuilding phase.
Our greatest need at this time continues to be financial help to assist in all of these phases. You can help today by giving a donation online or mailing your check to:
